When it comes to daytime television and most notably, daytime talk shows, there are few that have had true success. Oprah Winfrey is the grand dame of the daytime talk show circuit, and even though she is giving up her show after this season to try “something new”, her mark has been indelible. Others have tried to take her crown and most have failed. The View came on the scene with little buzz but has since created a cult-like following amongst their viewers, me included. The different personalities sometimes combining and sometimes clashing make for interesting and entertaining television. The formula is a recipe for success. And it’s been repeated with The Talk—CBS’s answer to the ABC powerhouse.
Let me say that I have not seen The Talk, which premiered this week on CBS. Following the successful blueprint of The View, it brings several popular women together to create chemistry—Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete, Sarah Gilbert, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Sharon Osborne, and Leah Remini take over the spot that used to be held for the cancelled As the World Turns. The Talk does not directly compete with The View as they are in two different time slots, but one cannot wonder what is up CBS’s sleeve. Do they want to go for Barbara Walters’ jugular by taking her idea and running with it? Do we need another The View?
I, for one, love all of these women who are on The Talk. Holly Robinson Peete is my BFF in my head and Sharon Osborne reminds me so much of my own mother. Sarah Gilbert always impressed me on Roseanne and I am a Big Brother fiend so Julie Chen is my girl. Leah Remini is best girlfriends with Jennifer Lopez so she must be good peeps too! And Marissa Jaret Winokur, well I don’t know too much about her other than she was on Dancing with the Stars. These are all amazing and successful women who have had great careers.
But I do not want to watch them together on The Talk. I don’t want to see a recycled idea. As much as I love these ladies and their personalities, The View is where it is at—Whoopi, Joy, Sherri, (and even Elisabeth), along with Babs makes my day. I can depend on them all to give me a show and make me think about important topics of the day. The View is constantly making headlines on their show, included the recent Joy and Whoopi walk-off after Bill O’Reilly said all Muslims were terrorists.
Imagine that happening on The Talk.
If The Talk lasts last two seasons, I will be surprised. America loves The View and their ratings show that.
What are your thoughts on The Talk vs. The View? Place your bets!
Jane says
Very Well noted. Ive DVRd all the Talk episodes and i have cringed at the notion that someone literally stole The Views blueprint and shamelessly aired for the world to see as their own idea. I love The Talk ladies, but i wonder if they have watched The View before launching.
carol says
Whoopie & Joy were way out of line walking off in the middle of an interview. I don’t watch it anymore those two women ruin the show.!!! I’ve switched to the Talk
J.P. says
My bet is it will last for quite awhile.
All these ladies bring something to the table.
The View has become way too political.
The Talk has some very funny ladies as well.
Leah, Sharon, and Holly most notibly.
If Dave, Jay , and Conan can co-exist, then why can’t The View and The Talk.
Shelly says
I, too, have stopped watching The View and as long as Elisabeth is there running her mouth, I won’t be back. I watch The Talk now. It is a breath of fresh air.
Dia says
Im with you, Shelly. I can’t stand Elizabeth or Barbara. But I’ve tried the Talk and it is annoying too. I choose not to watch it at all.
deanna says
I LOVE THE TALK
i’ve watched all the episodes i love how out spoken they all are my favs are Leah Remini and Sharon Osborne this show makes me laugh so hard
i’m sorry but i hate the view to me its so boring and their always fighting with each other and most of the time one of them gets out of line sorry thats just my opinion
Denny says
Have given up on the View with all the shouting and Joy’s old, old repeats of jokes. They need some new blood. Also, Barbara needs to really retire. It’s tiresome hearing her crew constantly patting her on the back for being “the first this, that and the other thing.”
The Talk is an alternative I turn to occasionally but since my son is in college now will often not find interesting. With a cup of tea in the afternoon it’s like sitting with friends. Although I agree, Lisa Rimini needs to lower the volume.
sandy says
i am giving the talk thumbs up. it has taken a while to grow on me, but frankly, so did the view. i myself, am very tired of whoopi. she is NOT all that to me… and i am tired of them fawning to her. i pray the talk feels threatened. in fact, whoopi has mentioned them (namelessly) a couple times now… so i think they feel something at their heels.
Tenesha says
This is not the first show to try to copy it’s basis off The View. A few years ago, NBC did the same thing and that show did not last a whole season. CBS needs to come up with something origional.
Terri K (@tkharmonic) says
I’ve watched the View, haven’t watched the Talk but I’ve read about it enough to think I’d like it. I tend to watch depending on who the guests are, I’m just not the type to watch a show like that daily.
Honestly, none of these women seem to me to have any idea what average, everyday women deal with and I’m kind of sick of wealthy women with tons of resources pretending to understand (or remember) what it’s like for the rest of us.
Jenny says
This is a stupid show. The soap that was on before this was a lot better.Do not watch this show.
Donna says
I’ll take THE TALK over the bigot laden
old biddies on the other one. The View
has nothing but narrowmined vicious liberal blather.
After Barbara W’s rant on John Boehner today she
has lost all respect I ever had for her. If she worked
for NPR and laid out “her opinion on someones mental health” she
would have been canned just like they did to Juan Williams
I HATE THE VIEW!!!
Christina says
I love the Talk, it a woman’s show, the view is a political mess with Elizabeth whats her face. I love everything about the Talk’s NEW idea of everyday things that we all experience not just what is in the news, I feel like I am sitting with my girlfriends talking about being a mother, wife, daughter and friend! I love the Talk!
Kelly Dicketts says
Hey Jane,
I don’t know if you are aware but we have stolen ALL of our great and not so great shows from the UK.
Back as far as All in the family, there have been NO new concepts on US TV!
Big Brother,Weakest Link, American Idol, and MANY MANY more were out right stolen.
The View stole Loose Women’s “blueprint and shamelessly aired for the world to see as their own idea”
So don’t sweat it! Given time The Talk will surpass The View because the view is all about arguing and negativity and vapid “young ones” with more opinion than fact!
LONG LIVE THE TALK!
Love The Talk says
I absolutely LOVE The Talk. What a breath of fresh air! I DVR both shows and have to admit that about 10 minutes or so into The View I delete it. When the arguing and talking over eachother start, I’m gone. Sooooo sick of that. And Barbara Walters needs to retire. She constantly interrupts and cannot get a sentence out without stammering through it.
jill says
talk better than view—leah & sharon the best. Can,t stomach elizabeth hasselback…..talk has fresh air all around it
Katherine says
I like the View but I LOVE the Talk! The ladies on the talk genuinely like each other and they respect each other. Leah has the strongest personality but she is likeable and even when she’s giving it to her cohosts, she’s showing them she loves & respects them. Joy is the strongest personality on the view & I would hardly consider her respectful, especially to Elizabeth! The ladies on the view talk over each other quite a bit!The View ladies I doubt hang out off camera, the Talk’s ladies do & their friendship shows on camera. The View seems like a meeting and the Talk seems like girlfriend getting together to chat!
elle says
I stopped watching the view awhile back – I couldn’t stand the lack of tolerance of others opinions by Joy – Joy and Sherri constantly talk over the others and both are always giving out incorrect information. They are scary! The view on the other hand is a great show – the women don’t talk over each other and genuinely respect the other opinions even if they don;t agree. The talk has nice women and the view has caddy, vapid women with the exception of Elizabeth. Babs needs to retire, she’s a disaster on that show. Elizabeth should join the talk.
Anne says
I am a big fan of The View and I watch it daily. So far I don’t have much interest in The Talk despite giving it a try. Although it’s the same concept, I prefer the varied personalities of the ladies of The View. Also, the fact that it’s a blatant copy of a show that I watch daily is a turn-off for me.
Yvette Thomas says
I love the View. The lively discussion and topics far outweighs that of the Talk. I’d try to tolerate the Talk but I just can’t stand homeweckers. I suspect Ms. Chen only got permission to “copy” the View because she managed to pry the CBS chief –Les Moonves from his first wife. Not surprising she thinks she can get by on other peoples’ ideas as with husbands.
Barb says
I so love , love, love, The Talk , I quit watching The View , it’s not fun anymore, and I used to respect Elizabeth but she’s been totally brainwashed by the liberals on the show, she calls herself a Christian but doen’t stand by that all, Sherri also calls herself a Christian but is always acting like she never had sex before. I think so many people call themselves Christians and don’t live up to it. A Christian is someone who lives their lives in Jesus name and has a personal realationship with him, and if either of them did they wouldn’t say the things they say, and act like Christian woman and not be ashamed of his name. I just got so sick of them being such hyprocrites. And Whoopi she is just a racist. It seems to me that the only ones that incite racism are black people if we don’t agree with Mr. Obama we are racist. We don’t agree with his policies so we shouldn’t be called racist for it. I’m just sick and tired of it. Barabra just needs to retire. And Joy there’s only one word for her which I can’t say but it sounds like Witch. she an agiong old bitty .
barbara mills says
I LOVE LOVE THE TALK. I am so sick of the view and all the screaming and politics. When Elizabeth would talk I would put the TV on mute. Sherri has become very loud and mouthy espically now that she has found a man. Wonder who’s going to wear the pants in that family? Barbara i agree needs to retire, i can fall asleep by the time she gets a sentence out of her mouth. The Talk if refreshing and funny. I look forward to watching every day. My favorite is Sharon. I also don’t like some of the zings Woopie and Joy and said. That just shows there intimidated and catty.
Greg Doornbos-Ross says
The Talk is way better than The View. The chemistry is just way better. I absolutely love The Talk. I love their dialogue at the beginning. They talk about things all of us can relate to. I DVR it everyday and can’t wait to see it each day!
facieg says
It is so obvious that the same people are posting comments with different names. most of them probably works for cbs an using various blog sites to promote the show. Here’s a real review; Out of tea in I give the view a 5. Because the talk Is a replica of the view, I give the talk a 2. If you going to copy someone’s idea copy a good idea.
Rick38 says
Hey, Im a 38 year old man who has dvrd the view for a couple of years for the first 10 or 15 minutes but they have gotten super annoying.Whoopi is a weirdo,Barbara just wants to push all her other crappy shows and shes an irratating old lady,Sherry and Elizabeth are retarded and Joy is bitter and NOT funny. The talk is pretty funny and even if the execs stole the idea that doesnt mean their not doing it MUCH, MUCH better. I cant stomach the view anymore. They just suck and im def not a cbs employee or someone posting under dif names.
Tray says
Seriously….people reposting things on here is crazy…the Talk is sooooo boring, sorry, The View is definitely where it’s at, you can tell by the comments here, CBS felt the need to send someone in and type the same comment over and over again, using synonyms….I don’t see them receiving an Emmy anytime soon at The Talk, unless they have a category for best stolen concept….
If you want entertainment, hot topics and variety, keep tuning in to the view, cause it’s just good….
Jack K says
Can’t stand the hate on view and the talk is, at least, entertaining ……. we sure don’t need anymore of the incivility of people like the view
Penny T says
I DVR both and the only thing they have in common is the number of women. I would hardly say that The Talk is trying to copy The View. The View is very political and at times that is so annoying that I almost want to turn it off, but what annoys me the most is that not a single person can say anything that Joy doesn’t try to throw some nasty comment in. The only ones that I’ve heard mention having a friendship outside the show is Sherry and Elizabeth. Elizabeth will be in Sherry’s wedding. Why should Barbara Walters retire? She is great at what she does and I’m sure there are women her age that tune in to see her. The Talk, well even my husband watches this with me. I love all the women and they come across as really caring for each others. It is just like sitting with friends. For those of you who think this show won’t last. Why not check the ratings.
carolyn johnkins says
i love sharon i can really relate to her.all the ladies are real and true to them selves.view is sooooo boring .I LOVE THE TALK ….thanks ladies !!!
the talk! says
I just discovered The Talk and I absolutely loved it! I typically watch The View when I can, but I’ve grown tired of the show. The Talk was just like a breath of fresh air. I felt relaxed and really sensed the chemistry between the hosts. Personally, the only people on the View whom I can stand are Whoopi and Barbara. I just can’t stand the other three! I hope The Talk gains more success and popularity!
Deb says
Stolen concept? Are sitcoms, dramas, soaps, etc., stolen concepts? Get over it. It sounds from the majority of comments The Talk is overtaking The View. I have followed The View for years and for about a year have no longer watched it. I love The Talk not only when they talk about current news but they have great celeb guests. Retire Barbara Walters and take Elisabeth with you, maybe then I might tune in. I think The Talk is here for a long while!
seusn says
you may love the talk but there is a lot of soap fans that never watch it so there you have it good luck cause you ginna need it i don’t not like any of those nitwit women who care about what they think idiot d a m n fools
Tess says
The Talk is So much better then the View the Ladies of the View talk over each other constantly and truly are very opinionated Whoopi is always making weird faces when she doesnt like what is being discussed ….. Elizabeth has always been out numbered . The Talk is Funny and a breath of fresh air you can tell that they like each other .. I vote for The TALK
marianne robinsoon says
I love the view Been watching since dat one. Never saw talk & don’t plan on watching
