A nicely written thank you note goes a long way, especially when you are congratulating a job well done for an employee or co-worker. With the advent of email, texting, and other forms of communication, it is easy to acknowledge the hard work of another person with just a few keystrokes. But as you are well aware, an email is not as formal as a written note to express your gratitude.
Case in point. We needed new photos made for the various apartment magazines in the area, and we only were given two days advanced notice that photographers were going to arrive at both of my properties to take photos of the buildings, grounds, insides of the apartments, and amenities. My groundskeeper came in early and left late each day, making sure that we were property weeded, watered, flowered, soiled, etc. When the photographer arrived, he complimented me on how well the property looked which was of course an ego boost for me, but wouldn’t have been if it were not for the tireless effort and work of my groundskeeper. I was able to soak up the compliments but I needed to pay it forward the man who worked so hard to make sure that I looked good.
I went out and purchased a Visa gift card for him. But instead of just putting it in envelope and writing his name on it, I took out some neat note cards that I never ever use and put a pen to paper and thanked him in a few short paragraphs. When he got the note in his inbox, he was pleasantly pleased and thanked me for the note. Of course with the note was visual evidence of the good deeds that he had performed, so if he ever decided to leave our employment, he had a hard copy of the wonderful work that he did. No matter if you are a man or woman, you appreciate being appreciated and a pat on the back goes a long way.
I decided at that point that I would write notes more often, not just to my employees and to co-workers and colleagues but to friends and family as well. The art of writing notes and letters should never go away, no matter how much we advance in technology.
