One of the things I was looking forward to most about this past weekend’s ‘The Traveling Chicks’ excursion in Chicago was an opportunity to have a personal tour of the Chicago State Street Macy’s location. As a lover of both shopping and history, I have heard such wonderful things about the Macy’s on State Street.
Lydia from the Macy’s Visitor’s Center gave us a grande tour of the largest Macy’s store in the world, apart from Macy’s Herald Square in New York City. We started with a lesson on how the building we were standing in started as Marshall Field’s. The building was destroyed twice in a fire, one incident was attributed to The Great Chicago Fire on October 10, 1871 which damaged about 4 square miles of Chicago.
It was rebuilt both times and rose to prominence at THE place to shop and dine in Chicago. In 2006, Marshall Field’s (under Dayton-Hudson) became Macy’s under much scrutiny of its mid-west residents, but has since become an accepted part of Chicago and the surrounding area.
The Tech Chick and I were treated to visuals from the wonderful and historic Tiffany ceiling, The Walnut Room, courtyard water fountain, and so much more. It was such a treat seeing the fixtures and history first hand while learning about their origins and stories behind it.

Below are a few pictures I took with my Blackberry during our tour. Special thanks to Kamal, Mayo, Lydia and the entire staff of Macy’s State Street for making this happen.

Hope you picked up a box of those famous frango mints or chocolates!

I didn’t buy any because I am not a min chocolate girl but we did have some samples and I was quite impressed that they were made homemade on site.
