Galentine’s Day is for sisterhood, friendship, and girl power. Documenting the amazing friendship between women is a powerful topic for movies, and helps showcase the magic of sister-friends. I thought that this unofficial holiday would be an excellent opportunity to create a list of movies that showcase sisterhood and the fantastic strength women share with one another.
Let’s take a look at my list of 15 Movies That Showcase Sisterhood. In no particular order:
Steel Magnolias (1989)
If there was a Holy Grail of movies about sisterhood, ‘Steel Magnolias’ would be it. Steeped in southern tradition and starring some of the best actresses of its time, ‘Steel Magnolias’ represents friendship amongst women of different ages and relationships. Young and old alike covet this movie, and it is required viewing for women of any age.
Waiting to Exhale (1995)
The film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s best-seller ‘Waiting to Exhale’ not only boasts an all-star cast but stays true to the book and to its message. With an incredible soundtrack and visuals that cannot be denied, it’s a chick-flick, rom-com, girl power medley that stands the test of time.
Girl’s Trip (2017)
What happens when four girlfriends meet up in New Orleans during Essence Fest for a weekend reunion? Comedy, of course.
Beaches (1988)
‘Beaches’ is a tale of two women who have been friends since childhood. While their paths take them on different roads, they come together during a pivotal time. Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey shine in this film, and if you haven’t seen it yet, have the tissue ready. You’ll need it.
The Color Purple (1985)
Two sisters who are torn apart make for a foundation for a novel-turned-movie that is still a favorite to this day. Based on Alice Walker’s novel of the same name, Whoopi Goldberg makes her auspicious debut as Celie, who finds strength after years of abuse by her husband. She leans on the hopes that one day, she will hear from her sister Nettie and finally be free of the pain she’s endured all of her life.
First Wives Club (1996)
Revenge is best served with girlfriends and– divorce? ‘The First Wives Club’ is a comedy that stands the test of time. Starring favorites like Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler, what could be better?
Thelma and Louise (1991)
Half comedy, half drama, ‘Thelma and Louise’ is a tale of a road trip that goes awry. With sexy scenes and a real cliffhanger, it is a girl flick personified.
Terms of Endearment (1983)
‘Terms of Endearment’ is a poignant film that spans a 20-year relationship between a mother and daughter and all that life deals them in between.
9 to 5 (1980)
What do you do when you work for an egotistical, sexist, and bigoted boss who can’t keep his hands to himself? Show him who’s the boss.
Clueless (1995)
“As if” became a part of our American vernacular overnight due to this comedy starring Alicia Silverstone and her girlfriends who are the popular set at a Los Angeles area high school.
Dreamgirls (2006)
Three friends who turn into a popular singing group in the 60s is the foundation for this musical remake of the Broadway hit, ‘Dreamgirls’. This movie turned Jennifer Hudson into a full-fledged star.
Hidden Figures (2016)
Black Girl Magic is the theme based on the true story of three Black women who worked at NASA. They were instrumental in serving a vital role during NASA’s early years.
Set it Off (1996)
Four friends, fed up with the paycheck-to-paycheck life begin robbing banks. It’s a 90s classic that is a must-see for the sisterhood movies set.
BAPS (1997)
‘BAPS’ (Black American Princesses) is a comedy that focuses on two Black women who want to open a soul food/hair salon business one day. They both enter to win a “Video Girl” contest for $10,000 which they don’t win. However, they win in other ways.
Imitation of Life (1959)
Two single mothers, one white, one Black, raise their kids with one another. They go from poverty to wealth, but what glitters isn’t always gold.
