I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but Yahoo has been all over the television lately, thanks to their new ad campaign. In it, various actors lip synch hits from such pop stars such as Kanye West (Flashing Lights), Lionel Ritchie (Hello), and Motley Crue (Home Sweet Home), as they walk through the matrix that is the Internet searching for a specific topic.
What I think is brilliant about the commercials is it doesn’t scream Yahoo. You have no idea it is a vehicle for Yahoo until you get to the end, and the iconic wail: ‘Yahoooo’ is blended into the melody of the tuneage.
It’s a video-esque with great music (especially the Kanye West ‘Flashing Lights’ one that immediately catches your attention).
These commercials are definitely for my generation: blending songs we grew up with and the songs of today and making us remember that Yahoo was THE major brand when it came to web browsing when we began our online experience over 12 years ago.
Yahoo has lost to Google recently as the web browser. Google has triumphed by offering a basic webpage with a search bar, where Yahoo seems to not know what direction they want to go. Some say their portal is way too jumbled while others say their searches are not personalized enough.
I still continue to use Yahoo. When I hear a breaking news story, I immediately go to Yahoo’s homepage to see if it is on the headlines. There is still money to be made by Yahoo—they just need to tap into streamlining their content and searches and make their site more user friendly.
What do you think of Yahoo’s new ad campaign? Hype or genius?
