From the time that I could read, I have loved technology. I remember playing with cool toys like my Speak and Spell and my Electronics set. I enjoyed tinkering with broken things and figuring out how everything else worked. When I look back on why technology was so important to me, I realize that it was because technology was always a very personal experience.
So, you can only imagine how excited I was when The Cubicle Chick asked me to write this guest post on “5 Technology Gadgets That Changed My Life”. In all sincerity, I could have written about 20 or 30 gadgets, but I will focus on my top 5.
Now, before I start this list, I need for you to keep in mind that I grew up in the 80’s and technology has progressed exponentially since then. Things that people take for granted today, were life changing back then. In other words, I’m old… DON’T LAUGH! With that being said, here are “5 Technology Gadgets That Changed My Life”…
The Casio Data Bank was a watch that was designed with more than just the ability to tell time or the date. It was a calculator and phone book all wrapped up in a cool metallic casing that screamed “I’m a nerd”. Sure the screen was tiny and the buttons hard to push, but with this watch, I became the envy of all my geeky friends.
In a time when boom boxes were king, the idea of a small portable music player was not what the masses were looking for. It wasn’t until I received my first Walkman for Christmas, that I truly appreciated my music being personal. I could listen to music I enjoyed without being judged by others and it was wonderful.
The Word Processor.
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking! Why not a computer of some sort on this list. Well, computers were still expensive in the late 80’s and a word processor could handle all that I needed to do at the time. For those that are still confused, a word processor was basically a mini computer that could only run a Microsoft Word type program. It was better than a typewriter and you could save your work to floppy disks. I would have never made it without it.
Sony Clie NX70V.
When Palm Pilots were at their peak, they all had one thing in common… They looked alike! So, Sony decided to use Palm’s great Operating System (at the time) on cool, slick devices that they designed themselves. Now instead of just being able to carry around phone numbers and appointments, the Clie’s could play video, take pictures and in some cases, get on the Internet. Needless to say… I’ve owned several models.
I would be lying if I said that everything Apple has done has been profound and has altered the space time continuum in some way. I also know that I risk being labeled a fanboy for even talking about Apple. The truth of the matter is that, several of their devices have made my life so much easier and brought it so much joy. (There… I said it) The iPhone has been no exception. I have come to depend on so many of its features, that I find that it would not only be hard to live without it, but hard to replace it with other devices.
There you have it! 5 Technology Gadgets That Changed My Life. As I said before, I could have definitely named more, but think that these 5 definitely rank near the top.
