My post about motherhood, inspired by the Color Full Lives podcast, is sponsored by State Farm®.
Between my 22-year old son and my 13-year old daughter, I have 35 cumulative years of parental experience. There have been many bumps, bruises, tears, jeers, trips, monumental moments, and breakthroughs along the way. Both of my kids, despite their almost ten year age and mileage differences, are close. They have so many similarities that I sometimes have to remind myself just who is who.
My motherhood experience began when I was just 18 years old. As an only child right out of high school, I didn’t have many experience with babies. When my son was born, something kicked in and clicked, even though I was single, alone, and struggling. We had many chips stacked against us, but we made it with the help of my family, my village, and divine intervention. He’s now 22 and living on his own (without help from his mama) in Los Angeles, chasing his dreams. I am so proud of him!
When my son was 8, I got married and had my daughter. She just turned 13 and we celebrated with a trip to New York City. She’s my shy and sensitive child, the introvert. Smart, witty, and kind, she is my flower that is blooming. Motherhood with her has taught me to be patient and to listen more and talk less. Daily, I am in awe of the woman she is growing up to be.
Motherhood is a word that means different things to different people. My definition of it is being able to love unconditionally and unabashedly while positively guiding your children daily so they can be on their own. Each day is about challenging them, inspiring them, teaching them, and most importantly, loving them. I am not a perfect mama, but honey, my kids are pretty dope.
Despite the chaos and uncertainty in our nation and world, my motherhood still remains optimistic. It’s currently Black History Month, and it’s been lit! There’s been plenty of Black Girl Magic and Black Boy Joy all up and down my timeline on social media and in the news. With all that is going on in the world, we have so much to be proud of.
Last year, I wrote about the Color Full Lives podcast featuring a trifecta of girl power. Radio host Angela Yee, Hey Fran Hey‘s Francheska, and tech advocate Tatiana King-Jones give a new meaning to girl chat during their highly entertaining and gem-dropping podcast. They’ve recently teamed up again to expand the show during Black History Month discussing topics relevant to our community, and I am here for it.
With three new episodes, you are sure to be informed, enlightened, and entertained. The ladies smash it during the first show talking about business savvy and goal setting, and this weeks’ episode is all about Black Girl Magic!

I agree that Motherhood is a gift. I had my daughter at the age of 19. Thankfully, I was around babies and my instincts kicked in. She is now 20 and off at college. I am proud of her. I also have a 16 year old and 5 year old too.
