For the last two weeks, the St. Louis region (and many other regions for that matter) have been experiencing higher than normal summer temperatures. For 10 days straight, we have been having temperatures of 100 or more, which is pretty high for this time of year. Factor in the humidity and well, the dog days of summer are brutal! Finding activities that keep my 8 year old daughter busy has been interesting—because of the harsh temperatures outside, experts state that you shouldn’t be outside unless you have to absolutely have to be. So doing things indoors is par for the course for us.
Recently, The Chicklet and I took an instructional cooking class through the Dierberg’s School of Cooking here in St. Louis. My daughter loves to help me cook and has fun assisting me with new recipes and I had never taken a cooking class, so it was something that we were both excited to try.
The cooking class we took was geared for kids and consisted of recipes that they could easily make themselves or help their parents with. We made soups, sandwiches, and a few desserts, which were all so yummy. Each cooking team was assigned their own “meal”, which were responsible for cooking for the entire class. Then at the end, we all ate as a group and shared our creations. Cooking instructors lead the class and help in making sure that everyone has what they need to create their meals. All of the food, cookware, utensils, etc. were provided by the cooking class.
Taking a fun cooking class in your area is a perfect indoor activity to partake in during these harsh hot weather days. Classes are relatively inexpensive (under $50 for one child and one adult), and usually have about 10 other child and parent duos so that the kids get to mix and mingle with one another. The class also gives you the chance to bond with your children while learning new recipes. Plus, it’s fun, gets you moving, and can come in handy the next time you want your child to help you with dinner.
Below are a few pictures we took during our cooking class activity:

The Chicklet is a great cook!
Based on our first fun experience with the cooking class, we will be back. I love activities that pique both of our interests and are fun and educational.
What do you think about this Kid Summer Indoor Fun Activity?
Disclosure: While Dierbergs is my favorite grocery store in St. Louis, this is not a sponsored or paid post. I paid for this class on my own and was not reimbursed in any way by Dierbergs. The opinions in this post, as always, belong to me. 🙂

I’ve done this class before! It was wonderful! Unfortunately I lost my recipes! Can you please tell me the ingredients for the meatball soup? It was so good! I have most of what I can remember but I think I’m forgetting some stuff.

Hi Jennifer,
I don’t have the recipe anymore but I know the meatballs were made with beef and breadcrumbs.
