This summer is going to be quite different for my family and I. With my new healthy eating and living lifestyle, I have incorporated a lot of action into our daily program. There won’t be many days of the kids and I sitting indoors pigging out and watching the boob tube. This summer, I am committed do doing more outdoor activities with the kids, which will no doubt, strengthen our bond and make us healthier and more fit.
The last few months have been challenging for me as I have developed ways to lose weight by staying active. I’ve been going to Zumba, parking further away in the parking lot to get more movement, and I’ve been participating in more activities that require me to move. My son and daughter have seen a difference in my lifestyle, as I have been also working to get them involved. My son (who is getting ready to go to college in the Fall) has been walking with me in the neighborhood. And my daughter and I have been going to the subdivision pool way more than we did last year—we are going about three times a week, which is keeping us burning calories. And it’s been fun, too!
Another way I plan on incorporating movement and fun this summer is by bike riding. I haven’t ridden a bike in some time, but I always enjoyed it in the past. I think by riding the bicycle with my daughter, I will not only burn a few calories, but spend some much needed bonding time together. It will be great seeing the neighborhood through a whole new perspective—and I know my 8 year old daughter is looking forward to riding her bike with me, something we’ve never done since she started riding her bike a few years ago.
There are all sorts of ways that you can bond together with your family through being active. Besides walking, swimming, and bike riding, you can have fun over an evening in the bowling alley or at the miniature golf course in your area. Something as simple as playing ball in the backyard can also be a way to bond while being active.
I am so looking forward to the summertime and being totally active with my brood. What are some ways you plan to be active this summer with your family?
If we’ve learned anything from more than a century of building bikes, it’s that some things never get old. From that first taste of freedom, when the training wheels come off, to the wonder of a parent letting go, and all of the ups and downs in between, magical moments in life happen on a Schwinn.
Life’s a ride. Enjoy it on a Schwinn.

I’ll be doing the same with my daughter this summer – getting up and getting active. I love that the warmer weather provides such an array of activities (many of them free) to do outside! We’re already planning hiking and biking trips, trips to the summer and I’ve signed up to be an assistant coach on her tee ball team – so we’re both getting in some fitness!!

Thanks for commenting, Alexandra. Hiking sounds like fun. I also want to get my daughter involved in an organized sport of some sort. She loves volleyball, so maybe I will see if there are some youth leagues in this area.

It is an important thing to spend time with the family members and to discuss a number of things.
