Going back to school this year is looking different for all of us. While some of you are opting to send your kids to school partially or fully, other parents are deciding to keep their kids at home for distance learning or homeschooling. No matter what your decision is regarding your child’s education, they will need supplies and other items for back to school.
Every year, I’ve shared a list of sales tax holiday dates by state, and this year is no exception. Preparing for back to school and all that it entails can be pretty pricey, so this list will come in handy for those of you who are looking to take advantage of the tax free weekend.
Sales Tax Free holidays occur in many states, often around Back to School time to help parents with the cost of BTS shopping. In most instances, it takes place over a weekend or two to three day time span. You can purchase items like clothing, school supplies, and some tech like computers and laptops without paying sales tax. This can really help when purchasing big ticket items (and if you don’t have a child, you can still get the discount on these items).
Please check out my list of 2020 Sales Tax Holidays by State, as it gives you the dates in your state, what is covered, and more. In some states, this includes things for your home as well.
States like California, New York, Illinois, and Georgia currently do not have Sales Tax Holidays.
The dollar amounts are “up-to” amounts, meaning that if what you purchase at one time is higher than the maximum cost, you will pay tax on it.
