October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s a bittersweet time for our family because we have two breast cancer survivors in our midst. My aunt, who I’ve written about a few times on this blog was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2012 and is now cancer free. My cousin was also struck with it in 2014, and she is also now living in remission. We have so much to be thankful for, and so in October, I not only show my support, but I also celebrate those who are fighting the disease everyday.
My Aunt and I during her battle with breast cancer.
For many years, I heard stories of friends and acquaintances whose lives had been greatly impacted by breast cancer. But it wasn’t until we were faced with it in my own family did I truly understand how devastating this disease can be. To see both my aunt and my cousin overcome such tragic circumstances and come out on the other side as a living testimony encouraged me—my problems were minuscule in comparison to the battle they waged and fought, and it was a lesson to me as well. Because of their stories, I’ve learned be totally grateful and appreciative of every moment and not take anything for granted. I am not happy to say that it took their diagnosis to teach me these important values, but I am so glad that through this challenge, they have come out stronger than they were before—and I have become wiser.
I am excited about the opportunity to team up with Healthy Ones to discuss their partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), not only because it’s a wonderful way for a brand to give back, but because it is a issue that has affected my family and so many others, it deserves attention. Since 2012, Healthy Ones has raised $170,000 for the BCRF, and this year, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Healthy Ones is donating a portion of October sales to the BCRF. For every 1 pound of Healthy Ones deli meat sold, $0.05 will be donated (up to $50,000).
You can support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by purchasing Healthy Ones products at your local market or retailer. Healthy Ones deli meats are certified Extra Lean by the American Heart Association, and they use only the finest cuts of meat and are minimally processed with no fillers and no artificial flavors. I feel good giving it to my family, and you can too. And because your purchase of Healthy Ones goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, eating it can also make you feel good as well.
