The workplace can be a stressful environment. Add that millions of people spend more time at work than any other place on a consecutive basis, it is a must that we take care of ourselves while in the office as well as out. When I worked in the fast-paced work environment in Corporate America, I was constantly looking for ways to find my zen and center while on the job. It helped to be able to have calming techniques that de-stressed and relaxed me so that I could continue day after day. Essential oils helped me fight illnesses others brought into the workplace and also gave me a way to find my calm and focus.
Essential oils are natural oils extracted from plants. They’ve been known to have medicinal purposes, and are widely used as a form of aromatherapy, allowing them to have curing affects.
Different essential oils have different benefits depending on their type. For instance, eucalyptus oil can help fight colds and other airborne germs. Peppermint oil is more of a relaxing oil that can help fight headaches and stress and aid in calming.
You can use these oils while at work to give you better workplace wellness and help you get through your day. The oils can be used easily while at your desk. For instance, with peppermint oil, you can take a few drops and put them on your fingertips and rub gently onto your scalp. If you are having a rough day, this could be just what the doctor ordered. You can also rub most essential oils on your temple, the nape of your neck, and on your wrist. The oils are relatively light and won’t cause a mess. (Before rubbing the oils on your skin, check the grade of the oils for safety, as they could cause irritation. Most essential oils sold in a health food store or over-the-counter can be used on the skin. But make sure to check the label first). Purchase therapeutic grade oils, as non-therapeutic ones may not be safe for conventional use.
You can also add the oils to a handkerchief or small towel. Place over your face for a few seconds and let it work its magic.
Oils that I recommend to be used in the office for workplace wellness are the following:
- Peppermint oil- relaxation/de-stress/fight headaches, migraines
- Eucalyptus oil- fighting germs/colds/flu
- Lavender oil- relaxation. Not to be used while pregnant
- Rose oil- calming
You can also use oils like Sandalwood, Orange Peel, Patchouli, Pine, and Wintergreen in the office (granted there aren’t any rules banning scents) at your desk, but not topically. You can add the oils to a diffuser and let the scent work its magic.
I am always looking for natural ways to help my mind and body, so using essential oils while at work really took the edge off of a sometimes difficult day. I still use them even now that I am working for myself. And I carry a small amount of peppermint oil with me in my purse. I like having it at my disposal for when I need it.
If essential oils aren’t your thing, you can also try these tips to help you fight stress while at the office.

This is something that I definitely need to give more thought to. I get a lot of migraines because of how long I stare at my computer screen. I love the smell of all of these, so it can’t hurt. I have an oil burner that i’ve never put to good use.. time to dust it off..lol.

Essential oils have so many benefits. I’ve read some use it for depression even. Yes, dust off your oil burner and put the essential oils to use. Let me know if you’ve found any benefits when using them.
