When it comes to Girl Power, I am all for it. As a mom of a nine year old girl who is full of intelligence, creative ideas, and talent, I want her to know that she has power and can do anything she sets her mind to. Whether it’s acing a test, competing in sports, or accomplishing any goal that she sets, I want my daughter to feel like she can do it. When I was coming up, there wasn’t a lot of talk about Girl Power and making sure our girls know their worth. Now, I think we as parents do our very best to let our girls know they are amazing—it’s not a man’s world anymore.
Case in point. My daughter wanted to join the boys when playing soccer during school recess, but was always told that she was “just a girl” and couldn’t play with the boys. She came home after school often sad because she loved to play soccer but wasn’t able to. I told her that she didn’t have to wait for the boys to play with her. She could get a group of her girls together and play their own game of soccer—which is just what she did. After a few weeks, the boys saw how good the girls were and how much fun they were having playing soccer. So the boys began asking if they could play as well. So now, they play together, the boys with the girls, and they are appreciative of each others’ talent and sportsmanship.
