Back in August, I wrote about seeing Christmas decor in the stores while shopping for school items. It wasn’t even Halloween, and we were being inundated with holiday stuff, which of course was way too early. I know that stores are in business to make money, but I am not nor will I probably ever purchase holiday items before November. So decorating and putting our holiday displays during the summer months, if to entice me, will never work.
When I was younger, I loved looking at the massive holiday displays that decked out my favorite stores and malls. But now, that same grandiose decor before it’s time churns my stomach. It screams commercialization and takes away from the true reason for the season.
And it looks like many other people agree with me also. According to a new study by SOASTA, a cloud and mobile testing firm, 75% of Americans think that decorations in stores shouldn’t be put up until after Thanksgiving. 78% of the people polled also stated that they didn’t want to hear Christmas music in stores before Thanksgiving, either.
This is something that I’ve known for years. And some retailers get it. I reported last year that Nordstrom has a long standing tradition of not decorating their stores until after Thanksgiving is complete. Celebrating one holiday at a time is something the retailer appreciates, and I, for one, appreciate it too. The Christmas Creep (the term refers to retailers and stores who decorate and display holiday items leading up to Christmas), starts earlier and earlier each year. It’s good to know that not everyone buys into that hype.
During SOASTA’s poll, people also stated that Cyber Monday is just as important as the Christmas Creep. 75% of those polled wanted retailers to concentrate on prepping for Cyber Monday, making sites load easier and faster during the high traffic of the day, and investing in apps and mobile sites that will allow for easy shopping on Cyber Monday.
The people have spoken and they are saying no to decorating too early for Christmas.
What’s say you. Are you for early decorating or not?
