I have pretty much given up on music videos. Most of the time, when I do manage to watch a station that actually plays them, I am turned off by what I see. Half naked girls dancing and popping, leaving nothing to the imagination. The misogynistic overtones of videos of men treating women as less than glorious creatures makes me turn them off after a few minutes. If I want to see T & A, I will look in the mirror. But I happened to be watching VH1 Soul and came across R&B newbie Elle Varner’s new video for her single ‘Refill’ and I gave it a look. Simply stated, not only is it a dope song, but the video is fabulously creative and entertaining.
Elle takes it back to the basics when videos had actual storylines and a theme. Elle plays a high school cheerleader who is in New York City for the first time with her cheerleading squad. They just won a competition and they are urged by their chaperone to head up to their hotel rooms because they have to leave to go back to Ohio first thing in the morning. Elle, looking at the NYC skyline is disappointed about this. She defies the chaperone and heads out to see the city. Then, bumps into a cute guy who happens to like what he sees. Together, he and Elle spend the evening together, creating havoc and enjoying one each other’s company.
The song is amazing, and I have been cranking it up in my car every time it comes on the radio. But the video is fabulous! It’s cute, entertaining, romantic, and definitely a breath of fresh air amongst…well….trash.
