As busy women on the move, many of us don’t always take time out for ourselves. Add that to the pressures and responsibilities of juggling work, family, and everything else on our plates, and we often save ourselves for last. The adage of saving the best for last works well in movies and for song titles, but in reality, doing so usually ends up not happening at all, because after we give so much to everyone else, there isn’t much left to give ourselves. We end up settling for less than what we deserve in our quest to satisfy others.
I learned quite early in my mommyhood that I wasn’t the best mom when my needs weren’t met. So pretty early on, I decided to, when possible, never settle for less than what I deserve.
Something is better than nothing? Yeah, right. Something that is not the right thing isn’t an easy replacement. An oftentimes, it leads to us not being satisfied. And we end up not being happy.
Here’s an example: I really, really want a BMW. A brand new sparkling new Beemer in my garage would be fabulous! And yes, if I wanted to pay some high monthly car notes, I could get a BMW now. I could also settle for less and get another type of a car, something that is more affordable. But buying a used car that is nice as only a filler for the car I really want wouldn’t be a good look. And I would be stuck with the car until who knows when. Instead, I will be patient, and wait until I can get that fabulous BMW, which I have been saving for. In a year or so, I can get the car a truly want, instead of settling for something less and still wanting a car that I don’t have.
I deserve that BMW. And I will have it. I am not going to settle for anything else.
The rest is true with out lives. Replacements and downgrades are okay sometimes. I mean, you have to make do, right? But often substituting what you want and what you deserve for “temporary happiness” isn’t good in the long run. If I settle for less all of the time, then it becomes a pattern that is hard to break. Believe me, I know. Many of us hold the key to our own happiness and refuse to turn the lock.
So I say this: never settle for anything less than you deserve. Don’t settle for a lower salary, a lower job title, less money from your tax return, or a less than stellar you just because. You are worth more than that.
You are worth it!
