I have never been avid couponer, but I have many girlfriends who use coupons on a regular basis and have saved thousands each year doing so. For me, I’ve never had the stamina or patience to go through the coupon process, but after seeing a sneak peak at TLC’s new show ‘Extreme Couponing’, I may be giving it another try. Who doesn’t want to save money?
TLC’s new show ‘Extreme Couponing’ follows a group of avid couponers who make saving money with clipping coupons a sport and a financial wonder. The cameras follow their subjects through the coupon process as they find and snip the coupons, to tracking down the bargains and the lowest available prices, to the shopping trip itself. It’s amazing to see how much money these men and women save with coupons and sales circulars.
Couponing is also big business! There are people who are professional couponers and make a living teaching others how they can save money through workshops, webinars, websites/blogs, and personal appearances.
Check out the snippet below of ‘Extreme Couponing’, which premieres on TLC on April 6th with two episodes at 9 and 9:30 pm EST.
Do you clip coupons? Do you want to share any tips? And will you be watching ‘Extreme Couponing’ on TLC?

OMG…I’m going home tonight and setting my DVR asap!!!!
I must say, I don’t have the 4-5 hours to be clipping coupons but I sure wish I did!!! I have always been a fan of coupon clipping and admire folks who get their discounts on. The problem for me has been I’m a pescatarian not many of those coupons ever apply to me 🙁 Occasionally, I get the few morning star coupons and totally take advantage of them but not much other than that. Also, I hate to say it but since I’m someone who totally watches what I swallow, those coupons tend to be for the not so healthy food so it’s another bummer.

Sandra, after seeing for myself how much people are saving with couponing, I am a believer. 🙂

Girrrrlll, I saw something like this a few months back (on somebody’s show but don’t remember what it was) and I thought “It’s gotta be something else to this!”
I need to start doing more couponing myself…my little $0.50 off one time isn’t helping! LOL
The Cubicle Chick says
I subscribe to the Sunday edition of the newspaper so that should be easy to do. I just got to remember to clip the coupons—-and bring them with me to the store. LOL.

I used to be a coupon queen before it became popular…I had stockpiles upon stockpiles and enough to give away to friends and family. It took a lot of work cutting the coupons and sorting through them. I would put them in baseball card sleeves and organize them by aisle.
The shopping trip would take about 4-5 hours…..plus all of the little stores that offered deals like the drug stores….it became really hard once I had my son though so I slowed down a lot. Eventually, I stopped because of the hassles I would receive plus now we have changed our diets to very minimal boxed and processed foods which is what most coupons are for!!!
The Cubicle Chick says
Rawkinmom, I’ve heard true couponing is a tedious process, because in order to get the best deals, you have to find out which stores have the best sales. And that could mean going to 4-5 places at one time. That is a bit much, and with 2 kids of my own, I am not sure if I have time to do all of that. But I do want to start incorporating more coupons into my shopping regimen. Thanks for commenting.

Couponing is fun and can be a rush. While it is not for everybody it is for me. I am one of the people who is on the show and in the commercial that is on Youtube. For my family of 3 I spend $200 a month on groceries, laundry items and personal care items. It can be your best friend if you give it a try. Coupning changed my life and is allowing me to save and pay bills sooner than I did before.

Antoinette: Wow, I just visited your blog and loved it! I also am looking forward to the new couponing show on TLC, I’m sure it will teach a lot of tips to newbies like me. I want to save money, so I am really going to start to concentrate on couponing. Thanks for commenting!

I saw the first episode of this show and loved it. I try so hard to save money with coupons, but I fail miserably and never come close to getting free stuff, or almost free stuff. I set my DVR to record the whole series – I can’t wait!

That special totally convinced me to start couponing. I haven’t gotten to the point of saving like the people on the special, but it takes time. I have a binder with coupons sorted by type just as they have on the show. There’s a local site, couponstl.blogspot.com that helps determine the local deals. In this economy, every little bit counts!

I clip many but my biggest frustration is, the circulars in my neighborhood are horrible. I mean how many rolls of toilet tissue and toothpaste items do I need? And couponing sites (like coupons.com and many others) only let you print out one coupon per item. Certain neighborhoods in NYC get certain kinds of coupons and that is COMPLETELY unfair. If I wait for the door circulars it’s one thing, but if I get the Sunday New York Times (cost $5.00) if it’s a week that coupons have been added, I will get them for coffee, meats, juices, basic grocery items. I need to move back to New Jersey just to get decent coupons!

Moni-When you go to sites like Coupons.com, redplum.com and smartsource.com, you can print up to two of the same coupons. You have to click on the back button two time to get them to print.
You are correct that coupons are regional. Here in Chicago, we may get a coupon for $1.00 off Milk and in Iowa there coupon will be $.50 off. It is an unfair system, but it is also based on the cost of living for the are in which you live in.
Most people don;t know this, but you can purchase coupons online from a coupon clipper. I purchase mine from Coupons by DeDe. She is a super sweet person who has some of the best coupons around. You can also get coupons from friends and family member for FREE. I get mine from my daughter’s teachers and some of the stores cashiers give me coupons, because they know I shop with them.
Mylast tip is to contact the companies about coupons. My favorite BBQ sauce is Open Pit. They rarely have coupons out. I wrote them an e-mail and a few days later, I had 10 $.35 coupons in my mailbox. I held those coupons until they were on sale for $.60. I use the $.35 off coupon that they sent me and only paid $.25. This BBQ sauce in Chicagocoat $2.39 regular price so think about how much I just saved.

I have never been big into couponing but I have done quite well at sales, many times saving more than I spend! I am interested in seeing the show. I’m not sure if I have the patience for couponing but who knows, maybe it isn’t as tedious as it seems?

Great post, Danyelle! I’m definitely interested in this show. I remember going into the Temple University Bookstore the other day, and there was a book from a woman who called herself the coupon mom talking about how to cut your grocery bills in half. I laughed a little at the irony that it was in the bargain book section, but then I thought that $4 now to learn how to save hundreds or even thousands later was a great investment. It’s in my reading queue now, and I can’t wait to learn the tips!
