That was a tweet I feverishly added to my Twitter stream yesterday. The reason? After waking up and going through my skin cleaning routine, I noticed that my lips were horribly chapped. Even after using my favorite lip balm, Rosebud Salve, my lips were dry and irritated.
I got several responses to my tweet regarding lip care, the two most helpful being from Odara112 and TheChicestGeek. Both of them gave me great suggestions for taking care of my lips during the harsh winter months.
The first tip from TheChicestGeek was to make sure I was hydrating on the inside so that it showed on the outside. By drinking plenty of water, it shows in your skin.
Secondly, I was advised to apply a lip mask of some sort in order to soften and smooth off my lips and get rid of the dead, dry skin. Hollywood Lips Take Three, Soothing Day Relief, Hydrating Night Balm & Sweet Sugar Scrub came highly recommended when I searched online. Sold in a 3 pack, it gives you a moisturizing lip balm to wear during the day, a night balm to help keep lips moisturized at night, and a sugar scrub that you can use during your normal skin cleansing routine twice daily. This set is $20.00 from Amazon.com and is very sought after.
There is also a wonderful product on the market that was also recommended called The Lip Slip. It supposedly gives “the richest, glossiest hydration imaginable. Wear it all day or overnight; the results are immediate”. And for $24.00 retail at Bath and Body Works, it should. I placed my order online so I will see just how fabulous this product is in a few days.
You can also make your own homemade lip scrub in your home with a few cheap ingredients of olive oil, honey, and white sugar. For the complete recipe an instructions, click HERE. I will also be trying this out myself to see if it makes a difference.
The most important thing is this: during the winter months, you may have to change your skin cleansing/maintenance routine because of the rough and drying conditions. What may work for you in the summer may not work for you in the winter. So for my Rosebud Salve, I may be putting it away until the weather warms up.
And then there is always the standby of old fashioned Vaseline.
Do you have any lip care routines/products that are great for winter weather?

I always have dry lips, not just in the winter & do get worse in the winter. I keep my humidifier plugged in. That helps me w/ dry skin & lips. I also use The Body Shop’s Lip Scuff to remove the dead skin and nothing works better for me that vaseline. I have tried everything & well, Bath & Body Works just didn’t do it for me. I hope it works for you because dry lips is just awful.

@Miss Sara, yes dry lips can begin to look like a crackhead’s lips and that is not a good look. The old stand Vaseline always cures.

Hey Cubiclechick, hydration is definitelythe key. But I also use a sugar scrub but the one I use hasbrown sugar instead of white. It probably doesn’t make a difference as long as it exfoliates the dead skin. Another thing that I do is keep lip balm EVERYWHERE!!! In my car, desk, dresser, wherever I may be without a purse. On the chapped tip, I generally wear more glosses with liner because the pigment in lipstick and liner causes my lips to dry out. That’s my two cents for the day. 🙂
The Cubicle Chick says
@Erika, these are very good tips. The brown sugar may be a little more denser than white, so I may try brown as well. And yes, having lip balm everywhere is essential. 🙂

Wow didn’t know such products existed but I agree with you! My lips have been impossible lately but C.O. Bigelows mentha-lip glosses have come to the rescue. I do want to try those products though because the winter time is when we should be the most kissable ;).
The Cubicle Chick says
@Fly11 I’ve never used C.O. Bigelow but I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about them. I’ve also tried Burt’s Bees which is good to. For me, it’s the removal of the dead, dry skin which causes the most issues.

I keep Vaseline in my purse at all times, and brush my lips every time I brush my teeth. My mom taught me that when I was about 11. She also said that a piece of tape applied over the lips can remove dead skin. I’ve done that once or twice when the weather was out of control. Mary Kay has a product called Satin Lips which is very good as well.

@Capricorn, Thanks for visiting the site for the 1st time! I hope it won’t be your last. Brushing your lips is an interesting as well. I have heard of the tape method before.
