While I was at the St. Louis Fashion Week event at Macy’s a few weeks ago, I learned that the proceeds of the show that evening went to Haven House. I had heard about the organization but didn’t have a lot of information. And being that my first degree is in Human Services, I have always had an affection and genuine interest in non-profits and organizations that help the people. I reached out to them via Twitter (gotta love Twitter!) and was surprised to hear back from Paula Kinney, the Director of Family Services. We made an appointment so that I could tour the facility last Friday and I looked forward to seeing Haven House.
Haven House is a non-profit agency that provides affordable lodging, meals, transportation, and critical support services for families traveling to St. Louis for medical care.
According to their website:
HavenHouse operates 24 hours daily, 365 days per year, so that families can arrive for check-in at any time of the day or night and may make future reservations up to one year in advance. In response to requests from families and the Hospital Relations Committee members, in 2009 we expanded the number of rooms with amenities on the first floor so that one wing (Bluebirds) is fully equipped with televisions and mini-refrigerators.
During my tour, I was able to see first hand the wonderful community living space that is Haven House. Haven House’s fees are incredibly affordable ($30-35 for pediatric patients and $40 for adults) but in order to keep the pricing low, donations are needed. You can donate money to Haven House or you can donate items or volunteer your time. Haven House always needs volunteers for maintenance, yard work, marketing, graphic design, cleaning, social work interns, and more.
The items most needed for donation at Haven House are:
- Laundry detergent (powder or liquid)
- Queen size bedding
- Waterproof mattress covers
- Ziploc bags
- Vacuum cleaners
If you can donate money, items, or time, please contact Paula Kinney at pkinney@havenhousestl.org.
I have an exciting announcement regarding an event myself and the Haven House are coordinating, and will share it with all of you really soon.
In the meantime, please visit Haven House’s website HERE to learn more about their wonderful organization. You can also call them at 314-454-5858 of you request more information.
Haven House is located at the Youth Bridge Community Foundation acreage in West County.
Below are a few photos I took during my tour:
Special thanks to Paula Kinney for the invite and the tour!
