This weekend is the annual Missouri Sales Tax Free Weekend, which is held to help shoppers during back to school time. Business and vendors offer their items without tax beginning on Friday, August 6th through Sunday, August 8th. This is the perfect time to purchase those back to school clothes and school supplies that can easily add up and penalize your wallet.
Not all items are tax exempt. Here is a basic list of items that are tax exempt this upcoming weekend:
Clothing – Any article having a taxable value of $100 or less.
School Supplies – Not to exceed $50 per purchase
Computer Software – Taxable value of $350 or less
Personal Computers – Not to exceed $3,500
Computer Peripheral Devices – Not to exceed $3,500
Yeah, so those of you thinking of buying a car this weekend to avoid the sales tax…um…nope. Won’t work.
In addition, there are a few counties/cities in Missouri that do not participate in Missouri’s sales tax free weekend. According to About.com:
North KC, Platte Woods, Riverside, Platte City and Smithville are opting out in 2010. Branson, Columbia, and many places around the St. Louis metro also opt out.
So make sure that you check with the store first if you are unsure if they participate. Many stores will have signage indicating that they are pro Missouri Sales Tax Free Weekend. For more information, visit the Missouri Department of Revenue’s online portal.
Other states also participate in tax free weekends as well. Click HERE for a comprehensive list.
