It’s been a stressful few days, and I will tell you why. My sixteen year old and I have been having a bevy of miscommunication issues. What started off as a misunderstanding has now become something greater. I’ve always prided myself and my great communication skills in the workplace, but I guess on the home-front, I’m not that great at it. It’s been a rough few days, a tense standoff shall I say because we both feel we are in the right. It’s such a long and sordid tale, so I won’t bore you with the details. Just know that it all started out with a text message, a text of his that he sent me and I responded to.
With the advent of such technological advances such as email, texting, instant messenger, and the like, are we as a society losing something in the translation? Are we communicating effectively, or are we making shortcuts? And what does this all mean in the overall grand scheme of things? Will our children be able to continue to have and develop interpersonal communication skills? These are valid questions that I wish I had answers to.
I know I rely heavily on instant communication. But in the end, are we selling ourselves short? Food for thought. Let’s discuss!

Text messages are very easy to misinterpret.
