I have a love/hate relationship with the social network Facebook, and apparently so do others. Because of Facebook’s ever changing privacy policy and handling of personal information, many users are fed up with the number one social networking site. A group has been formed for those to quit Facebook on May 31st, and there is even a website issuing information to interested participants. The website boasts that over 1700 people have committed to quitting Facebook via their cause.
Another group, Facebook Protest, is challenging Facebook to change their current privacy policies, or is asking for a complete boycott of Facebook on June 6th. They even a Twitter handle called @FacebookProtest in which you can follow and they will keep up-to-date about the anti-Facebook movement.
According to Facebook Protest, they want you to do the following:
‘Commit to not logging in or interacting with Facebook in any way. Be sure to log out of Facebook in all of your browsers no later than the evening of June 5th. On the 6th, be sure to not use Facebook connect or click any “Like” buttons: basically refrain from ALL Facebook related activity.’
I am not a fan of Facebook at all and I much prefer Twitter as my top social network as I have blogged many times, but I also understand that as the top social networking site, it’s a necessary evil. Their privacy policy has been a topic of conversation for months now, but in the grand scheme of things, is it bad enough for us to stop using it completely? How does their privacy policy compare to those of Twitter, Myspace, Yahoo, Google, etc.?
What are your thoughts about Quit Facebook Day. Will you be turning off Facebook forever?

Facebook isn't my favorite social media site – but it is one I use regularly. I won't be quitting on May 31st.

Nope. No plans to quit. Sadly 1700 people out of millions on Facebook isn't enough for anyone to blink an eye at. I love Facebook far too much to ever quit.

I will be leaving facebook altogether ASAP. I have deactivated my acct., but I'm not sure that is enough. It is apparent to me that those who love facebook must never have ever had any enemies, ever in their lives. My admitting to such enemies is probably seen as my being a loser to them…so be it, I don't really give a damn. I am 47 years old, not a high school kid who only knows other kids.
I was ABUSED by someone who is showing up on my "suggested friends" list, with their picture. I deleted them in the past; however, when you deactivate your acct. and you then go back in to see something referred to by some other site, like to see pictures of an event (like I tried to do), facebook makes you sign in and it takes you to your profile instead of where you wanted to go, and, completely RESETS your acct. as if you never had been there before. So, all of those members who ever submitted your Email address (and all of their friends and enemies-stupidly submitted to facebook by letting facebook have unfettered access to their entire Email address book) show up as "suggested" friends anew, even if you already deleted them MONTHS ago.
WTF more TORTURE should I be subjected to? This practice on facebook is personally offensive to me and is directly screwing with my therapy. I now live (physically) 2600 miles away (opposite coast) from the offender, but I'm still subjected to their torture thanks to facebook. I had no legal recourse against this person.
What a magical world "Katie" and "RobynsWorld" (posters of the polly-anna comments above) must live in. I don't live in that world. Given all of the recent news about the "Big Brother" nature that facebook is trying to take on (by their sharing personal information with businesses and other things), I will have nothing more to do with it. I've been abused enough. If the people I did allow into my facebook page (current close personal friends and family members) will not contact me via Email or telephone, then too bad, it won't bother me all that much.

Wow. I am not a fan of any of this social media, to be completely honest. It actually scares me and the comment made by Dennis is a perfect example. I try to convince myself that I only use facebook to chat with friends, but that doesn't seem good enough. Things like getting a friend request from an estranged relative or having to face someone you hoped to never see again… well, that makes me want to quit it for good.

Well I have had a FB account, they disalbed my account all of a sudden and they give out baseless excuses, and also they have not given me any oppontunty to have a fair dinkum negtiation about it, they made their choice not to have me as a user and thats that, I think FB will soon die out for how they treat users. There has to be more friendly site for those people who run into problems and websites should be able to negotiate with the user for a best outcome for both parties not just the website, FB has gained a reputation to act in a baseless manner and not placing warnings or not writing clear enough information, Only warning I obtained is when the account was disalbled, I saw friend count and messages being deleted but I thought that was the friends themselves doing it not facebook, Facebook's site is flawed and not enough communcation with the user.

I recently quit FB because I was so sick and tired of people putting in their statuses like “going to the washroom”, “i’m mad”, “way to go joe”…WTF! Part of the reason I quit was because a friend told me about an Anti-Facebook website called Koowie or http://www.koowie.com . It proclaims itslef as the “anti-facebook” website. You actually can find me there with profile James.

I deleted my facebook.. well deactivated it. (It seems it doesn’t allow to to completely delete it because it has this weird mind set that those who delete it will want to come back) Anyway, I deleted it 4 or 5 months ago to punish myself because my grades were going down from the frequent distraction of facebook. My grades did get better after I deleted it and I found myself so much more calm and more energetic. I used to find myself on the weekends cooped up in my room, huddling around my laptop, just refreshing the facebook page. Now I actually do stuff! I go outside for runs, interact with new activities, and am WAY happier. Altogether, no facebook makes you have a REAL life, not a cyber life. (at least in my case)
